Born and raised in Winnipeg, Pat Porth has been a journalist since the days of hot type and
stop the presses, beginning her apprenticeship on the
Free Press Weekly Prairie Farmer and the Winnipeg Free Press. She worked for, then edited, Style, the (then) Maclean-Hunter
fashion retail trade paper, and
served as chief communications person for Eatons Central
(Ontario) division for a year.
After a period as an organizational guru at Retail Council of Canada,
where she developed and administered a wide variety of educational
events and other meetings and also retained responsibility
for the associations public relations and marketing efforts,
she started her own freelance writing/editing business.
Initially specializing in corporate newsletters, often in
partnership with Jim Hilborn,
she began writing for Canadian FundRaiser
about five years ago, and assumed the editors role in August,
2001.
The relationship with CF has pulled Pat into the nonprofit sector;
she is currently chair of the York
Region Relay For Life for the
Canadian Cancer Society and serves on the board of the Literacy
Council of York Simcoe, as well
as participating in such one-off activities as handling
registration for the MS
Walk in April.
