Jane Garthson, Contributing Editor, Governance
Jane is Principal Consultant of Mills Garthson
& Associates, dedicated to strengthening Canada's nonprofit organizations
through enhanced leadership and ethics. She provides services
in governance, hands-on transitional leadership, executive
coaching, strategic planning, partnership development and
organizational reviews. Sectors served include charities,
associations, corporate marketing and philanthropy departments,
collectives, co-operatives and governments. She was an Executive
Director of a provincial amateur sport federation for almost
three years, and, along with key volunteers, led a very
successful turnaround.
She holds an honours certificate in Voluntary
Management and Leadership from York University, and a national certificate
from the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy. Jane is a member
of the Canadian Society of Association Executives, the Alliance
for Nonprofit Management, BoardSource,
the Coalition of Ontario Voluntary Organizations, ethicscentre.ca
and IMAGINE.
Jane is a founding member and past Chair of the Ethics Practitioners
Association of Canada, still serving on its Advisory Council
and Education Committee. She has conducted ethics audits
in the voluntary sector and ethics oversight in the public
sector. Some of her ethics consulting and training is done
as an associate of EthicScan Canada.
She currently volunteers on the Ethics Review Committee of the Canadian
Council on International Co-operation, and continues to
assist the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association, where
which she recently completed three terms as Treasurer.
She trains, writes and speaks on topics such as Recruiting
the Board of the Future, Best Practice Trends in Nonprofit
Governance, Strategic Planning, Ethical Leadership and Ethical
Decision-Making.
